After the Orgy

What happens when all social struggles — for freedoms, rights, and acceptance — have been won? The successes of gay liberation and the subsequent incorporation of LGBTQ+ narratives into contemporary culture have left gay men, the sexual revolution’s former foot soldiers, without a political aim and unable to articulate their interests.

Society at large, meanwhile, struggles to differentiate between desirable and detrimental sexual norms. Yet it insists that even the most radical cultural demands will somehow eventually come together in a sensible liberal consensus – without, alas, voicing what that is. 

The recent publication of two books — Ronan McCrea’s The End of the Gay Rights Revolution and Inversion: Gay Life After the Homosexual, edited by Amir Naaman and Pierre d’Alancaisez — marks a turn in the discussion of gay culture, history, and politics.
